INTRODUCTION TO FIXED WING FLIGHT TESTS

This course provides practical exposure to fixed wing aircraft flight tests. The course includes seven flight exercises on three aircraft types. Instruction focuses on flight test methods, test planning, data acquisition and analysis. Students will participate as crew, recording data in flight in a fully instrumented, laboratory aircraft. A tutorial session after each flight will guide the students through the data analysis process. Students will gain an understanding of the flight test process from planning to execution, analysis and reporting with reference to both civil and military specifications.

FIXED WING PERFORMANCE FLIGHT TESTS

This course provides an overview of fixed wing aircraft performance measurement flight tests. Instruction focuses on flight test methods, test planning, data acquisition and analysis. Participants are introduced to civil specification for fixed aircraft (CS23/25) aircraft and methods of demonstrating compliance when testing a new or modified aircraft.

This course provides an overview of fixed wing aircraft flying qualities flight tests. Instruction focuses on flight test methods, test planning, data acquisition and analysis. Participants are introduced to both military and civil specification for fixed wing aircraft (CS23/25) aircraft and methods of demonstrating compliance when testing a new or modified aircraft.

DIGITAL FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEMS TESTING

The three-week Digital Flight Control Systems Testing Course addresses digital flight control systems testing and certification with specific reference to applicable military specifications including MIL- STD-1797, ADS-33E PRF and case studies of civil airliner certifications in accordance with FAR Part 25 requirements. Students are taught Pilot Induced Oscillation (PIO) detection methods and have the unique opportunity to identify and experience them in the ITPS engineering simulator. Students will gain the fundamental knowledge and experience to be able to interact with flight control systems engineers on test programs.

ROTARY WING PERFORMANCE FLIGHT TESTS

This course provides an overview of helicopter performance measurement flight tests. Instruction focuses on flight test methods, test planning, data acquisition and analysis. Participants are introduced to both military and civil specification for helicopters (CS 27/29) and methods of demonstrating compliance when testing a new or modified helicopter.

ROTARY WING FLYING QUALITIES FLIGHT TESTS

This course provides an overview of helicopter stability and control and handling qualities flight tests. Instruction focuses on flight test methods, test planning, data acquisition and analysis. Participants are introduced to both military and civil specification for rotorcraft (CS27/29) and methods of demonstrating compliance when testing a new or modified rotorcraft.

INTRODUCTION TO AVIONICS SYSTEMS FLIGHT TESTS

This course provides an overview of avionics systems flight tests. The course includes four flight exercises on one aircraft and one simulator type. Instruction focuses on flight test methods, test planning, data acquisition and analysis demonstration of compliance with certification requirements. Participants are introduced to both military and civil avionics systems testing. The applicable regulatory and guidance materials, recommended methods of demonstrating compliance when testing a new or modified avionic systems.

ELECTROOPTIC AND NIGHT VISION SYTEMS FLIGHT TESTS

This course includes one Night Vision Goggles laboratory session, one NVG cockpit compatibility and visual acuity laboratory exercise and a single night time NVG compatibility flight exercises. Instruction focuses on ground and flight test methodologies, test planning, data acquisition and establishing mission suitability of the modified cockpit. Participants are introduced to both military and civil methodologies and specifications for NVG operations and testing.

STORES CERTIFICATION AND WEAPONS TESTING

This course provides an overview of the aircraft Stores Certification process as defined in MIL-HDBK-1763 Stores Certification. Students are provided with an introduction to fighter aircraft weapons as a foundation to the weapon testing aspects. The Handbook defined Ground tests and flight tests leading up to captive carriage and Safe Release flights are described with an emphasis on how to plan and execute test safely and efficiently, data acquisition and analysis requirements and methodologies. The course also addresses Weapon System testing from the Man Machine Interface point of view. The Combat Aircraft Engineering Simulator will be used to provide practical exposure to the test methods presented. Delegates upon completion of this course will have a thorough preparation allowing them to participate in Stores Certification and Weapons testing of any combat aircraft type.

CIVIL AIRCRAFT CERTIFICATION FLIGHT TESTS

This course provides an overview of the aircraft certification process as pertaining to three Civil Certification Authorities, the Federal Aviation Administration, the European Aviation Safety Agency and Transport Canada. Instruction focuses on explaining the phases and milestones of a typical certification programme, an overview of the regulations and requirements for flight testing. Participants gain valuable insight into the many compliance demonstration requirements on a typical civil aircraft certification programme (FAR23/25).

ROTARY WING VIBRATION FLIGHT TESTS

This course provides an understanding of the sources of helicopter vibration. Students will gain an appreciation of the effects of vibration on crews and crew effectiveness and the importance of minimizing vibration. Delegates will also gain an understanding of the effects of vibration on the helicopter’s structure and components and of designing to minimize vibration. The civil certification requirements and approved methods for measuring and testing for vibration, including equipment and transducers will be discussed.

UAV SYSTEMS TESTING

To provide a solid grounding in UAS technology, flight operations and the principles and techniques of UAS OT&E flight test. Provides candidates with a thorough introduction in the discipline of OT&E flight testing as it relates to Unmanned Air Systems specifically. Provide training in the discipline of UAS OT&E flight testing, management and reporting. Provide practical experience of UAV OT&E flight tests and flight test management. Provide thorough preparation in UAV OT&E test techniques and test aspects for the associated sensors, systems and weapons

OPERATIONAL TEST AND EVALUATION COURSE

The Operational Test and Evaluation Course provides cost effective flight test training for operational pilots and engineers and managers who will be involved in OT&E testing of aircraft, equipment and systems. The course provides a solid grounding in the principles of flight test, coupled to an understanding of key concepts of OT&E and its associated processes. The course comprises thirteen days of instruction covering approximately 60 hours of lectures and briefings related subjects includes an and a series of practical exercises including flight test demonstrations. Each student receives in flight demonstrations on school aircraft and in the school’s engineering simulators. Graduates of this program will gain a thorough understanding of the key concepts of Operational Test and Evaluation and test methodologies.

FLIGHT TEST MANAGEMENT

This course provides an overview of considerations for the successful management of a modern aircraft flight test programs. The course will address management, organisational, human factors as well as logistics and resource management issues. The course will provide managers with an overview of the flight tests to be undertaken if a fighter aircraft program, the associated manpower and facilities requirements, methodologies and success criteria. The course will draw extensively on case studies from recent combat aircraft flight test programs examining some of the lessons learned and pitfalls for managements associated with different tests. Lecturers will discuss the different categories of hazardous flight tests, management and organisational as well as cultural factors that can add to the risks as well as risk management and mitigation methodologies and strategy.

PREMIUM COURSES:
ADVANCED PERFORMANCE FLIGHT TESTS

This premium course provides a deeper look into performance flight tests, emphasizing its application to modern high-performance air vehicles. The attendees should gain understanding in the performance model validation principles, starting from aircraft model creation, flight planning for efficiency and accuracy, up to test execution. Flight test specific areas of statistics and design of experiments are taught, as well as some specialized performance topics. Reference is made to 4+ and 5 Gen fighter aircraft through examination of published case studies. During the course the students participate in a simulator project where they have the chance to apply the taught material.

ADVANCED FLYING QUALITIES FLIGHT TESTS

This course provides a deeper look into flying qualities and flight control system testing, emphasizing its application to modern high-performance aircraft.  The attendees should gain understanding in the control design principles of 4 and 5 Gen fighter aircraft and their control laws and the flight-testing challenges. The USAF Flying Qualities Standard MIL-STD-1797 is analysed both in terms of FQ specifications as well as HQR evaluation tasks. Reference is made to special FQ subjects and 4+ and 5 Gen fighter aircraft through examination of published case studies. During the course the students participate in a simulator project where they have the chance to evaluate different CLAWs using the taught approach and MIL- STD-1797 criteria.
